Woof Digging

Digging is natural! However, not all digging is for making a hole. It needs to be determined why your Woof is digging if you wish it to stop. Here are four reasons a Woof will dig. Please determine which applies to you so you can choose the action to prevent it.
  • Digging under or at a fence. This has nothing to do with digging and has everything to do with escaping or wanting to get to your neighbor’s fun yard. See our recommendations for the best deterrent for this type of digging.
  • Digging to go after a bug or ground animal. Again, this has nothing to do with digging and everything to do with going after a stimulus. We do not encourage anyone to spray their lawn with chemicals as it affects the environment negatively. Prevent your Woof from being alone in the yard and allow them access when you can watch and provide plenty of toys. If you need to leave them alone, you can put down chicken wire on the ground and affix it with wire u-stakes. The grass will grow through the wire, and you will not see it after a while.
  • Digging to find a cool place to lie down. This is more about providing a place where your Woof will feel comfortable and cooler. Your Woof needs to cool down and their natural instinct is taking over to prevent overheating. Do not stop them unless you provide a better, cooler location.
  • Digging because it is fun. Okay, here we go! There are two steps to stop this type of digging. You need to know that your Woof is very proud of their hole! Know your Woof will return to the same hole because of this pride and joy in their work. You will place something in the hole that will confuse them and now create a negative thought toward their hole as now their hole is ruined. Do not let them see you do this. Next, provide something fun and exciting so your Woof will not try and dig another hole, due to still being bored. We have splendid examples of how to keep your Woof entertained in your yard.
