Traveling with your Meow
Make sure you have a collar on them! It is a MUST when traveling with a Meow. Have a tag made with your cell phone number on it and a small tracker you put on their collar that beeps when you press a remote or use an app. It is worth every penny you pay for it! The tracker lets you know where your Meow is located throughout the entire trip. Even if you use a crate in the car you will need to take your Meow out at night. Meows tend to snuggle where you cannot see them and when in a hotel room, they will hide in locations so small you wonder how they got there.
The question as to whether to use a crate for a long trip (over 6 hours) depends greatly on the size of the crate and the humans in your car. Young children may quickly open a window or jump out the door at a rest stop. This requires you to invest in a medium-size cat crate that fits both a place to lie down and a litter box, or place a halter on your Meow and attach a leash that can be looped to something if your car does not allow for a crate due to size. Praise Training allows our Meows to roam the car freely on cross-country trips but we do not have little humans in the car. We attach a leash on them before stepping out of the car at rest stops, using the beeper to locate where they are upon stopping. No stress for you and a lot less stress for the Meows.
Next is the Meow litter. If you do not have one already, purchase a smaller enclosed litter box. Put just enough litter on the bottom so they cannot kick it out upon use and so that it is light enough to carry the litter box into your hotel room at night.
Put a small amount of water in a flat bottom bowl or purchase a no spill pet water dish. If you are allowing roaming in the long car ride, make the tent in the back of the car or back seat with the litter box near it. If you are using a crate, make sure there is room for the litter box and soft place to hide in the crate. Never leave them without anywhere to hide. See example. If you are not using a crate, you will still need a small animal carrier that you can place them in when you take them out of the vehicle. Please never just carry them unless you have a safety harness and leash on and are holding on to the leash as well as holding them.
If you are staying in a hotel room while traveling it is encouraged to put them in the bathroom with their litter a blanket and their tent bed. If you choose to allow them to roam the room, then be prepared to use the beeper on their collar to find them and extract them from a very small crevice no one knew existed.
If your Meow is crying excessively remember that comfort and holding them is the number one thing they need. Correction will only stress them out even more! Holistic anti-anxiety products If you are traveling alone and another is not available to comfort them it is encouraged to provide a toy with catnip sprayed on it.
